Brightmore of South Charlotte Senior Living Helps to Provide Christmas for Hurricane Victims
The residents, their families, and the staff of Brightmore of South Charlotte senior living community are determined to put smiles on the faces of children who were impacted by Hurricane Helene in September. Early last month they started collecting new toys to send to children in the region in time for Christmas.
Tracey Sloop, executive director of Brightmore of South Charlotte recalled she was watching the news after the hurricane and saw the “devastation in the North Carolina mountain areas. All I could think of was about all the toys the children lost, and how nice it would be to provide them with toys for Christmas,” she said. “I know they’ve lost a lot more than toys, but to children, their favorite toy means a lot to them.”
Sloop said that previously, the senior living community had collected supplies for victims of the storm with the guidance of the son of one of the residents. He works with the Battery Park income-based senior apartment community and the Western Carolina Rescue Ministries. “I contacted him, and he’s assisting with the toy drive through Henderson County,” Sloop said.
The toy drive started on November 8th. On December 10th, the toys will be picked up and delivered to the Toys for Tots in Henderson County. The collection bins have been overflowing with gifts for the children.
“Our residents, their families, and our staff have been very generous in their donations. I think we realize that we take so much for granted. Putting a smile on a child’s face, especially when they’ve faced so much turmoil, well, it does the heart good to give back.” said Sloop.
